Biography

Personal life

Meg Cabot was born on February 1, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana. Cabot had a speech impediment during elementary school, which many of her classmates called her names for. She wrote about those kids in her diaries, and would later insert some of the scenes into her books.[1] According to her website, Cabot was not a big fan of high school.

She went on to study Studio Arts, instead of Creative Writing, at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She graduated in 1991. She states on her website why she choose art over writing:
"Because a random guy I met at a party I went to in high school told me not to study creative writing because in his opinion studying creative writing as a major sucks the love of writing out of you (he was a creative writing major, so he said he would know). I did not want the love of writing sucked out of me, so I followed his advice (however, I did take a few creative writing workshops at IU and I enjoyed them very much). Instead, I had the love of art sucked out of me."
—Meg Cabot[src]
After that, she reveals that the "random guy" was her husband, Benjamin D. Egnatz. They met again years later at a party, after Cabot had graduated and moved to New York.[2] The two eloped in a small village, called Diano San Pietro, in Italy on April 1, 1993, a play on how husband's belief that only fools get married. According to Cabot's blog, the mayor of the village did not take them seriously, and refused to wed them. After, they paid 50,000 lira to a local fund, and seeing Cabot in her wedding dress, he performed the wedding ceremony.[1]

Career

Her first book, Where Roses Grow Wild was published in 1997, when Meg was thirty. It had took her three years for her to obtain an agent, and one year to find a publisher. She went on to publish six more romance novels, under her pseudonym Patricia Cabot.
